Delicious mocha and black-cherry flavors distinguish this layered, supple and complex wine blended from Malbec, Merlot, Petit Verdot and Petite Sirah grapes. Moderate oak spices of cinnamon, vanilla and cocoa surround the core of fruit, while light tannins give a slight grip to the texture.
Chelsea Barrett Winemaker
Chelsea Barrett grew up in Calistoga and began working in vineyards and wineries from a young age. She attended UC Davis and graduated in 2010 with a degree in Viticulture and Enology. After college, Chelsea interned at Mayer am Pfarplaz (Austria), Two Hands (Australia), and Opus One (Napa Valley). She started as enologist at Joel Gott wines in 2012, where she was promoted to assistant winemaker a year later, then to winemaker in 2017. In 2017, she also joined Heidi as co-winemaker for Amuse Bouche and Au Sommet.
Chelsea is the daughter of Heidi Barrett (from Screaming Eagle fame), and Bo Barrett (Chateau Montelena).
2019 Midnight has a deep purple hue and dominant notes of raspberry, red currant, and black tea, along with subtler notes of licorice and white pepper. The first sip reveals vibrant acidity and lots of red and blue fruits. Cocoa powder tannins and a little spicy oak fill out the mid-palate. This is a medium-weight wine, but the finish has surprising power and persistence. This will be best from release to 7 years of aging and incredibly versatile for food pairing.
