Opalie de Coutet Blanc 2022

Opalie de Château Coutet is a rare and refined dry white from Barsac, produced in very limited quantities from select 45-year-old vines rooted in limestone-rich soil. Fresh citrus, floral aromatics, and a mineral backbone create a wine of both elegance and power, a unique expression from this Premier Grand Cru estate. During his years in France, Thomas Jefferson praised Château Coutet as “the best Sauternes in Barsac”.

In 1994, the estate partnered with Baron Philippe de Rothschild, whose technical and commercial expertise further enhanced Coutet’s reach and prestige worldwide. Together, they continue to uphold the legacy of one of Bordeaux’s most historic properties while introducing innovations like Opalie to new generations of wine lovers.

Sharp and lifted, a real intensity of lemon and lime with fragrant orange, grapefruit and touches of bitter rind that give interest and accents. Has a real sense of life with a delicate sweetness giving reference to Sauternes and mouthwatering acidity. Really lovely-persistent, forward, focussed, clean, thrilling and lively. Nice detail and moreish quality.

The 2022 Opalie has one of the best aromatics amongst the dry Sauternes I tasted, with mineral-driven citrus fruit and flint emerging with time. The palate is well balanced with orange rind, tangerine, good substance and a tangy, quice-tinged finish. Very fine.
