Hendry Vineyard Napa Valley Red Blend 2012

Hendry Vineyard Napa Valley Red Blend 2012

  • 3599

The Hendrys have been farming the same vineyard since 1939. All of their wines are from the estate and sustainably grown. Earlier on the pioneers grew plum trees and raised cattle. In the 60s and 70s Napa experienced an increase in demand of grapes. The Hendry's grapes were known for their good quality and sold to Mondavi, Opus One and Kent Rosenblum.

This Napa Valley Red has the traditional Bordeaux varietals but unlike Bordeaux blends that are either predominately Cabernet Sauvignon (Left Bank) or Merlot (Right Bank), this wine is an unusual blend (percentage wise) of  28% Malbec, 24% Cabernet Sauvignon, 19% Petit Verdot, 19% Merlot and 10% Cabernet Franc and was aged for 18 months in French oak barrels, with 70% of them new barrels.

The blend is so unique and would require some decanting, as suggested by Robert Parker, "The sweetness of the fruit becomes more apparent with airing. This fascinating wine would be hard to peg in a blind tasting."
