Banshee Mordecai California Red Blend 2016
Today the Banshee Wines mission remains the same as it was in those early days – to craft distinctive wines that over-deliver in every possible way. Banshee was originally founded by three friends from the Midwest and East Coast who shared a passion for wine and a lifelong dream of owning their own winery which was a fascination for each one having started early in their lives. Post-college each pursued a career in the wine industry ranging from importing, production, and distribution/sales. Ultimately they ended up in San Francisco's Dog Patch district together putting their business plan into action in 2009 with money borrowed from their friends and family.
The grapes are sourced from vineyards located in Anderson Valley, Sonoma County, Napa Valley, and Mendocino County. The formula behind this blend is rough and unscientific. The organic Carignan is sourced from a vineyard in Redwood Valley and acts as a bridge between the Rhone and Bordeaux varietals. Consisting of about a third each of Bordeaux, Rhone, and other Zinfandel dominated varietals, the juice is aged for 15 months in French oak using 100% new oak is on all of the varietals except Cabernet Sauvignon and Petit Sirah which only used about 40% new oak.
Blend: 24% Cabernet Sauvignon, 16% Zinfandel, 15% Tannat, 14% Malbec, 10% Petite Sirah, 9% Merlot, 5% Carignan, 4% Syrah, 3% Grenache.
Mordecai is a kitchen-sink style proprietary red blend comprised of Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, Zinfandel, Merlot, Carignan, Cabernet Franc and Cinsault. This is juicy, ripe and extremely well balanced, showing luscious roasted plum fruit, bright red cherries, and warm notes of clove and allspice. Aged for 15 months in French oak, this is plush and generous while still maintaining a marked lightness.
