Skylark "Rodger's Creek" Sonoma Coast Syrah 2014

  • 3199

Cote Rotie meets California. Rodger's Creek is nestled in the hills above Petaluma in the Sonoma Coast appellation. This block has a gentle slope at 800 feet, planted to a Cote Rotie clone specifically selected for this site. The 2014 was a drought vintage, however under the cool coastal fog, the vines held on to water and fared very well in the warm vintage. Aged 24 months in 40% new oak and then bottled unfined and unfiltered. Only 125 cases produced.

For those who enjoy Northern Rhone styles, this Skylark's single vineyard Syrah was inspired by Cote Rotie and Hermitage. Skylark wine company was founded by John Lancaster and Robert Perkins. John was the Wine Director a the James Beard award winning Boulevard Restaurant. Robert is an artist and a wine consultant for several Bay Area restaurants.

"Easily my favorite in this consistently good to outstanding lineup, the 2014 Syrah Rodgers Creek offers up a sensational, cool-climate like style in its black fruits, olive tapenade, pepper and gamey aromatics. Nicely concentrated, balanced and seamless, with notable freshness, it's going to drink nicely for a decade."

Wine Notes

From the winery: "Ruby red. Complex aromatics of blackberry and black raspberry with flecks of Provencal spice and black pepper. While the spice notes linger in the background, it’s the fruit profile that takes the center stage. Plush and creamy, the black fruits caress the palate with seamless grace – ripe but not heavy, juicy but not sweet. The whole cluster inclusion adds a savory element to the California fruit, and the clonal spice note brings freshness. The 2014 is a worthy candidate for the cellar, but it is hard to resist now." 14.8 % Alc. Pair with lamb, gyros, eggplant and any meats with allspice, clove and mint.
