Domaine Sigalas Santorini Assyrtiko Athiri 2016
Robert Parker writes: “Sigalas is one of Greece's finest white wine producers- in fact, a short list candidate for the best. This producer is universally acclaimed for his skill with Assyrtiko of all types. He is simply a master with this grape.” Considered the oldest, continuously cultivated vineyards in the world, over 3000 years, Santorini is one of the rate wine-making areas in the world not affected by phylloxera. All of the vines were able to retain their original root stocks. The native varieties of Santorinithrive on the porous volcanic soil of the island. The soil here is Aspa (black volcanic lava, ash and pumice). Low yields and old vines add mineral complexity and natural acidity to the wine.
Founded in 1991 by Paris Sigalas, Christos Markozane and Yiannis Toundas are considered pioneers in the organic viticulture movement and has been practicing organic farming since 1994. If you ever visit Santorini, you will find vines pruned to a basket-shaped “ampelies” to protect the grapes from direct sun exposure and strong winds.
