Bodegas Roda Rioja Reserva Tempranillo 2012

  • 4999

Located in the famed Rioja Alta region along side estates such as Lopez de Heredia and Muga, Bodegas Roda has a stellar location next to the Ebro River. Founded in 1987, Bodegas Roda is one of the most modern of the traditionalists and the most traditional of the modernist. The vineyards are on a terrace jutting out like the bows of a ship from the Haro Barrio de la Estacion to the river Ebro. Here, an underground cellar, reaching down 12 meters below the surface, was once used in the 19th century, when local wine growers stored their vintages there before shipping them by rail to Bordeaux to alleviate the crisis caused by the phylloxera epidemic.

Only indigenous grape varieties (Tempranillo, Graciano, Garnacha) is produced from old vines, typically bush trained with no irrigation, no pesticide and no chemically synthesized products. Harvest is done 100% by hand into small crates. A total of 20 blocks of vines are carefully supervised and the best 17 blocks are identified each vintage, picked and vinified separably in different vats. All 17 different wines spend one year in barrel before blending. All of Roda's wines are produced and bottled at the winery aged in 100% French oak (50% new) in underground cellar. The reserva has spend a total of 3 years in aging: 14 months in oak barrels, 30 months in bottle.

89% Tempranillo, 9% Graciano and 2% Garnacha
